Test Drive - October/November

You wake up... in your bed or wherever you went to sleep because your character is exactly where you left them. A revival of the classic LJ/DW game DramaDramaDuck (DDD), D3 is an attempt to capture the spirit of the classic with some adjustments. The name, and the names of many parts of the game, pays homage to the original while allowing it to be something different as I'm not a founder of the original. I just had fun there and thought it sounded fun now.

An Open Lid game, as opposed to a JamJar; your characters remain in their canon worlds and timelines but can access a magical network to connect to other canon's universes. You, with the help of your castmates should you have them, decide how they experience shape your remaining canon, even if it means nothing changes at all.

Welcome to the D3 test drive. Prompts are sparse because this is the game where you make the story. Some optional suggestions are:

A. Hit by an infection

Like it says on the label. Your character has been hit by one of the monthly infections that take place on the network. This particular infection shouldn't alter the personality too much if you're planning to use it as a sample. For more information on infections, read the faq found here.

B. Canon update

Something happen at home you want to share? Or don't want to share, but the network is showing anyway?

C. A call to arms

Trouble is brewing, and you need help? You have worlds full of superheroes to ask for help. That doesn't always mean they can reach you...


That's the down and dirty. Not quite as fancy as you're used to seeing, huh? D3 is a simple game. Or it's not. It's up to you, the player, to make your experience. There will also be a log community so you can do face-to-face meet ups, and anyone can go off-world this time.

To perhaps capture the group game feeling that differentiates D3 from memes, consider noting whether you're open to threadjacks with a subject line like so:

To-oh University is my first pick. I haven't made it in yet, but I do well on the practice exams so I'm confident.

It's not an easy profession, and it makes a lot of enemies. It takes a lot of work to make it through the program, and it's not something everybody can do. It's something we have to have in our society but like doctors, it takes a lot of skill to be successful.

You are precisely the sort of police officer I hope to have in my precinct. Someone who pleases everyone and seeks not to make enemies is not an ally to anyone, much less justice.

I'm going to join the NPA one day. Making everybody happy would mean releasing the criminals. It's not really something I can do if I want to protect anybody.

Is that a problem in your world? Does law enforcement let people go unfairly?

This isn't a hopeful religious sermon but a confirmed phenomenon. Interpol and each nation's law enforcement are seeking him to hold him accountable.

Does he go by another name?

Kira. It had originally been from the English word "Killer." It's crass, but overcoming a simple PR problem hasn't been beyond God. Even in English speaking announcements, it's pronounced as Kira.

[ They're from the same world and that means Light has to tread carefully. He can't openly admit to agreeing that Kira is right, but this man seems to be on his side.

As a prosecutor. Because he understands the value of justice and that it hasn't been found in courtrooms. ]

Why do you call him a god?

Isn't it self evident?

It seems to be to you, but you haven't said what he's managed to do.

He eliminates those society does not need, shaping the world in his just image.

God is more real than any believed in by any other faith on earth; there is no "faith" required. To deny him would be to deny a live televised execution.

[ While it's nice to hear a positive spin on execution, it's not a moment Light recalls with fondness.

For a moment, there's an internal debate. Publically, he has to denounce Kira. He does even in the real world. However, he can spin this easily enough should anyone see it and become suspicious. After all, who's more likely to know his identity? Supporters or those chasing him? ]

He's managed an execution on live television, but they haven't been able to catch him?

They put before him an enemy, challenging him to smite him before them. God did, and with it, affirmed to the world that those who fight against him are heretics as worthy of elimination as any other criminal.

It's beyond impressive. A God who cannot speak to his followers, but who can communicate his will only through elimination.

Smite. Normally, the word implies something aside from the usual killing method. How does Kira eliminate his targets?

[ It's true that no matter the reasoning, the man deserved to die. This man, a man whose name Light still hasn't acquired, is right. ]

Officially, by heart attack. It can be assumed other methods are available, but that a consistent one allows clear attribution.

He's capable of giving someone a heart attack? Magic isn't as odd as it used to be, but you make him sound more like an exception than a rule.

[This is a boy who has set his sites on ToDai and believes, with evidence if his test scores are to be believed, that it will not be in doubt that he will enter. He's not someone who would actually need to clarify whether it's a world where such magic is commonplace when he's being deemed a God by a reasonable man who seems to be on a world with, if nothing else, similar geopolitics, the same nation and institutions.

The reason is unknown, but the boy on the other end of the device is playing dumb about something. Possibly attempting to use a Socratic method in trying to talk him out of his worship.

He would hardly be the first to find Mikami overzealous. Indeed, the present official sources of justice hesitate to fall in behind God's orders. It's a matter of time, but the police are, for the time being, seeking him under criminal charges and the government is cooperating with international forces such as L, who has promised to end God's life. The thanks he gets for solving more crimes and social problems within a few months than all of those agencies combined could do, with their years of experience and research.

Or it's possible this boy is good at studying, but not particularly good at thinking.

Or it's possible that when something such as the community or the supernatural become involved, rational thought isn't as easy to put into practice.

The way to determine if the boy is good or bad is simple enough, at least.]

Are you for or against God?

[ Light would disagree with Mikami's thinking. They're in a world where magic is possible in a very real way and exists on a sliding scale. It took long enough for Mikami to state the cause of death that it would be assuming too much to think magic is the oddity there. After all, the death of criminals can come from a knife or a gun. It's his ability to do it from afar and his sense of justice that gives him the divine name.

Light knows it's not, but Mikami doesn't know they might share a world. ]

You're asking me to make take a stance based on not very much information. I've only learned he's able to create heart attacks in the last couple of texts. As someone starting law school, I'm sure you'd understand why I'd want more facts before drawing a conclusion.

It isn't that ability that makes him God.

[God eliminates evil. The fact that he can do that more effectively than anyone else through magic is decidedly not such a central feature of his divinity.

Despite his noble goal of joining the police, he is the type, then, who would make some petty excuse like needing to trust the system. This person may never understand God.

It's not enough for Mikami to write him off as evil, but indeed the legal system is in need of zealous reform and more reasonable people like himself, if it is going to become a system that supports God in their shared aims for society.]

It's a detail that I wouldn't have known if I'd made my decision earlier. How many others am I still missing?

It does make me curious. It'd be shocking to learn of somebody who can cause others to have a heart attack, but it sounds like we're both from Japan. What year are you from?

It's early November 2003 for me.

[ It's a lie, but Light knows late November is when he begins his mission. If questioned, time is odd enough to jump forward quickly. ]

Should his actions have happened already? It's possible that even if we're both from Japan, we're not from the same world.

We must not be. It isn't surprising; multiple users of the nexus from the same node are the exception rather than the norm. It resists being exposed to anyone who isn't chosen.

Do you hope for God to manifest in your world?

Then, he should have made a move by now?

[ Kira is definitely a shared component. He hasn't made a move by early November in his world. Is there some form of divergence? ]

You're still asking me to side with someone I don't know. I can't wish for or condemn him based on the knowledge I have.
