Test Drive - October/November

You wake up... in your bed or wherever you went to sleep because your character is exactly where you left them. A revival of the classic LJ/DW game DramaDramaDuck (DDD), D3 is an attempt to capture the spirit of the classic with some adjustments. The name, and the names of many parts of the game, pays homage to the original while allowing it to be something different as I'm not a founder of the original. I just had fun there and thought it sounded fun now.

An Open Lid game, as opposed to a JamJar; your characters remain in their canon worlds and timelines but can access a magical network to connect to other canon's universes. You, with the help of your castmates should you have them, decide how they experience shape your remaining canon, even if it means nothing changes at all.

Welcome to the D3 test drive. Prompts are sparse because this is the game where you make the story. Some optional suggestions are:

A. Hit by an infection

Like it says on the label. Your character has been hit by one of the monthly infections that take place on the network. This particular infection shouldn't alter the personality too much if you're planning to use it as a sample. For more information on infections, read the faq found here.

B. Canon update

Something happen at home you want to share? Or don't want to share, but the network is showing anyway?

C. A call to arms

Trouble is brewing, and you need help? You have worlds full of superheroes to ask for help. That doesn't always mean they can reach you...


That's the down and dirty. Not quite as fancy as you're used to seeing, huh? D3 is a simple game. Or it's not. It's up to you, the player, to make your experience. There will also be a log community so you can do face-to-face meet ups, and anyone can go off-world this time.

To perhaps capture the group game feeling that differentiates D3 from memes, consider noting whether you're open to threadjacks with a subject line like so:

Reserves will open for the first time on October 1st and apps will follow October 7th. After they open, they'll remain open instead of having cycles.

[He's the guy in charge, now. He can't appear weak. Even if he wants to just curl up and sleep for a week, he can't.]

My commanding officer's dead. Anyone have any... tips? Advice? We're kind of under seige, so... it's not going very well.

If you can get off world, go now. You're not abandoning anything. Time seems to usually freeze when you're away from your original world. Anyone who helps you come up with a plan will need to know more details than you likely have time to give.

I'd love to leave, but we're cut off from headquarters. And the Guard tends to frown on desertion.

With time frozen, they'll never know. You don't have your device with you?

Wait, is that what that thing does? I can go... anywhere? Should I go to where you are?

A majority of the time. Sometimes, it seems to make mistakes, but they don't seem very common.

I'll need a few minutes to get someplace else. Get ready, and you can come here. I'm not a commander, but I'm good with strategy.

I'll... start this thing up, then.

I'm a little cautious about giving my address over an open network, but somehow, it seems to work by intention.

Give me five minutes. You'll appear in a street, but we can go someplace quieter to talk after.

A road without much traffic, I hope.

A residential street is a better explanation. You probably don't have as much time as I would need to clear the neighborhood completely, but I'm not inviting you over to be hit by a car.

It's safe.

All right.

[He operates the device until he disappears from his room and appears on the sidewalk.]

Huh. It's quiet.

[ The neighborhood is quiet and nice, especially by Japanese standards. The homes are packed closely together with little space for a yard, but that's the norm.

Light, stands beside him, phone in hand, though he pockets the device once the man appears. Thankfully, it's late enough that no one else seems to be paying attention. ]

We didn't get a chance to introduce ourselves considering the tight time frame. I'm Light Yagami.

[He grew up in a place with similar density, so he doesn't remark on that.]

I'm Elim Rawne. Major Elim Rawne, technically. You said you could help?

I'm offering to try. I'm not experienced in war, but I am good at figuring out strategy. Can you tell me more about your situation?

[major_rawne]

We're stationed way out at the end of the fortifications on the planet Jago, in a fortress. Our maps must be wrong or incomplete, because the enemy are coming out of nowhere. And our commander just died.

[worldcleansing]

Does your world have the technology or magical ability to make it literal? Is teleportation a possibility?

[major_rawne]

The enemy we're fighting is Chaos. They have magic. They could teleport, for all I know.

[worldcleansing]

I need to know what abilities both sides do possess. Start with your own.

[major_rawne]

We've got most of a regiment. Our skill is in scouting, so we've all got decent stealth. Our primary weapon is the lasgun, but we've got some heavy weapons and snipers, too.

[worldcleansing]

But there's no magic on your end?

Then, what magics are confirmed on theirs?

[major_rawne]

Mind control. Corruption. Other foul doing, most likely. I'm sure someone, somewhere in the Imperium studies them, but I don't.

If your CO's dead and you're in command now, you need to check your inventory. Especially the food stores and the medical supplies. Get them to a place where rats won't get at them and where they won't rot easily and ration everything. [A pause.] You'll start to see the rats as viable options for food too, actually. I recommend that if you get to that point, you make damn sure the rat's not carrying anything that'll kill you as sure as a bullet can.

[This is far more than he's talked in—quite a while, actually. But he can't resist.]

Then figure out who's dead and who's not. Ideally you want your medic alive, but in case they're not, whoever's got the steadiest hands and the most medical knowledge is the new medic. Put the most able-bodied men on watch shifts, in case something happens, and if anyone's not too seriously injured, put them to work too—cooking, cleaning, inventory, whatever. [Another pause.] If you've got people who're too seriously injured, people who might not make it...just ease what you can for them. They deserve that.

And, yeah, I'll second the off-world idea too, if time'll just freeze in your world anyway. Get some distance to get a hold of yourself and figure out your plan, then come back.

[He writes down a list of what the guy's told him.]

Casualties aren't that bad, for now. We've got two medics and orderlies, still. I'm gonna go offworld, too. If it freezes things, that'll help.

[snowstormed]

So far as I can tell, usually freezing’s the case.

[A nod, then he stops, remembering. Right, this is voice.]

If you can pretend that you just scrounged them up somehow, you ought to start getting things from offworld as well. Most people here are willing to help. [Someone opened her home to him when he asked on the network, that’s how willing to help.]

I don't think people will worry about where supplies come from, if it helps. We're getting kind of desperate.
